Hi, I’m Emily Thompson.
I am an experienced tutor and pre-service secondary mathematics teacher located in Phillipsburg, NJ. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in math and literature from the College of New Jersey. I continued my education at Rutgers University, and am currently in the process of obtaining my New Jersey State Teaching Certification and an M.Ed degree in Secondary Mathematics.
Throughout the course of my student teaching field experience, I observed and taught classes including Geometry, Algebra I and II, and Precalculus at a variety of levels, as well as an AP Statistics course. I believe in standards-based instruction and am fluent with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards/Common Core State Standards for Secondary Mathematics.
During my time at TCNJ, I worked as a tutor for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as well as the campus Tutoring Center. I worked with students enrolled in math courses including Precalculus, Calculus I-III, Statistical Inference, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, and Number Theory. I also conducted weekly Praxis Core review sessions for aspiring educators. While in graduate school, I worked as an instructor at a local Mathnasium Learning Center.
Over the past several summers, I have worked for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Programs, first as a teaching assistant, then later as an instructor. I teach a course called Paradoxes and Infinities to classes of gifted students, ages 12-16.
